Email marketing can be an extremely valuable tool for every company that is trying to boost awareness of their brand and promote their products or services without spending a fortune. With these tips, you will be able to create emails that get noticed, humanize your business, and educate your audience through your email marketing campaign.

1. Let customers know what content you will be sending. Whatever the reason behind your emails may be, it is important that your subscribers know what to expect. If your audience knows you will be sending coupons, articles that educate, event updates, or other information, they will be more inclined to open your emails. It’s important to let your readers know as much information as possible about what will be sent to them will prevent people from unsubscribing in the future.

2. Send a “Thank you for subscribing” email. As soon as someone hits that submit button, a thank you email should be sent welcoming them to your company and emails, as well as reminding them of why they signed up and what types of emails will be sent.

3. Create a content calendar. During the busy workday you may forget to regularly send out emails, leading to subscribers forgetting about your business and that they signed up for. The best way to stay fresh in their minds is through consistent emails planned in advance on a content calendar. This handy calendar should be planned a month in advance with the topics you will be writing blog posts, social media marketing posts, and content for your email marketing campaigns on. Having a calendar will make it easy to know what content you will be writing about in advance. However, if a more relevant topic or sale comes up that needs to be included in a future email, the calendar can be edited to fit your business’s needs.

4. Listen to your audience. Sure, you may want to tell all of your subscribers about your products, services, or company as a whole, but is this something they will want to read about? As you create the email, think about your audience and what they may want to read. If you have several different audiences you would like to create an email for, you can create segments in the email marketing tool you use to send out a different message to each demographic.

5. Have someone review the email before hitting send. Once you hit send there is no going back. If there are any grammar, image, or link errors, it could reflect poorly on your company’s brand. Ask one, two, or five people to thoroughly read it in order to find any mistakes prior to having your customers find it in their Inbox.

6. Test it. Different devices could make the email appear distorted or unusual, so take the time to review it prior to sending it to your subscribers. Send yourself a test email to discover how it will appear to your audience on their mobile device or tablet.

7. Make it mobile-friendly. If readers are not able to view the email on their smartphone, this could be a problem. One study determined that 63 percent of Americans and 41 percent of Europeans would close or delete an email that was not optimized for their mobile device. Since more and more people are using their phones to check emails and browse websites, you could be hurting your email marketing results by not having mobile-friendly emails.

8. Research the CAN-SPAM Act. The CAN-SPAM Act was established to penalize those who send out bulk emails without the permission of their recipients. If you received emails from a networking event or a casual discussion with a possible new customer, make sure they understand what emails you will be sending out by sending a “thank you for subscribing email.” Also, place an unsubscribe button at the bottom of each email to give your audience the option not to receive them if they so choose.

9. Make it easy to share. If your audience likes what you have to say, then make sure it is easy for them to share it with all of their friends and family. Add a share button that will allow readers to show others the wonderful content or sales they received from your company. This button should allow them to share on their social media pages or through email.

10. Only send an email when there is something to say. Just because a competitor sent out an email does not mean you have to. As you are designing your email message, think about what the goal of the message is and if it aligns with your current marketing campaign. By not having a clear plan for your email, it will most likely end up getting deleted.

11. Make subscribing easy. If your customers are finding it difficult to subscribe to your newsletter, you will most likely not be getting all of the subscribers you were hoping for. Have your social media management team send out a link to your subscription form and have an easy-to-find form available on your website for your customers to complete.
